PMD Celebrates 30 Years of People, Progress, and Plenty of Good Memories

Power Measurement & Distribution (PMD) recently had the incredible privilege of celebrating a very special milestone: 30 years in business.

Founded in 1996, PMD has grown from a small business into a trusted nationwide utility management company serving residential and commercial environments across South Africa. Established in George where the headquarters remain, it also supports customers from its branches in Cape Town and Gauteng.

During the weekend of 8 to 10 May 2026, the entire PMD team, along with their partners, headed to the beautiful coastal town of

Plettenberg Bay for a weekend filled with celebration, connection, laughter, and appreciation.

Reaching 30 years in business is an achievement we're incredibly proud of, but this weekend reinforced something we've always known: PMD is about far more than utility management. It's about the people, relationships, and shared journey that have brought us to where we are today.

Celebrations started when everyone arrived at the new head office building in George, from where they headed off for a relaxed lunch at Piza e Vino, at the spectacular Knysna Heads. Like proper tourists everyone enjoyed the journey along the beautiful

Garden Route to check in for the weekend at the Plett Quarter Hotel.

Friday evening kicked off with dinner at Slops in Plettenberg Bay. Good food, great music, and plenty of laughter around the tables set the tone for the weekend ahead. What started as a casual dinner soon evolved into an unplanned karaoke session, proving that PMD has far more hidden musical talent than anyone expected!

Saturday brought a bit of adventure to the weekend, with the team enjoying an excursion to Birds of Eden and Monkeyland, followed by a relaxed lunch at Kay and Monty. Spending time together outside of our usual work environment reminded us how important these moments of connection really are. It also confirmed that some of us are much braver around monkeys than others!

Early Saturday evening everyone gathered at the beautiful Plettenvale Wines for the highlight of the weekend: our Gala Evening. With its elegant atmosphere, spectacular surroundings, and warm hospitality, the venue provided the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable evening celebrating 30 years of PMD.

Guests arrived looking exceptionally elegant and ready for an evening to remember. For one night, utility management took a back seat as the PMD team gathered around tables filled with good food, great wine, and even better company. The evening featured heartfelt speeches from management, long service awards recognizing dedicated team members, and plenty of laughter.

The long service awards were a particularly meaningful part of the evening. Celebrating the loyalty, hard work, and commitment of team members who have contributed to PMD’s growth over the years was a reminder that companies are not built by systems or strategies alone. They are built by people.

Reflecting on the milestone, Director (Technical), Johan de Klerk, shared:

“Reaching 30 years is a testament to the incredible people behind our company. PMD has always been built on strong relationships, hard work, innovation, and a shared commitment to delivering value to our clients.”

Director (Finance), Marietjie Launder, added:

“This celebration was about more than marking a business milestone. It was about celebrating the people who have walked this journey with us. Seeing staff, families, and colleagues together made the weekend incredibly special.”

As the night went on, conversations moved from the tables to the deck, where the incredibly talented Shaza provided live entertainment and an infectious energy that quickly drew everyone in. It didn’t take long for the dance floor to fill up, proving that the PMD team is just as committed to having fun as they are to their work!

An honorary toast was raised by JP Crawford to the founder, Barry Shackleton and previous directors, late William Erasmus, Neal Douglass, and Llewellyn Thomas, all now retired. PMD has continually adapted to the evolving utility landscape, earning the trust of clients nationwide through innovative solutions, industry expertise, and a commitment to exceptional service.

Thirty years later, one thing remains clear: while PMD has grown tremendously over the years, our greatest strength has always been, and will always be, our people.
